They were wrong. Now I have a new job and I work from home. More Oppo time incoming.
Printer to go in the closet along with most of the drive arrays. I’m also going to order a better chair.

Thinking about working all day in that chair makes my spine hurt.

I’m not proud of the $0.87 metal folding chair either. At least the desk is a standing desk, and that mat is comfortable enough to stand on.

Working from home for me usually means completing tasks takes a bit longer than if I was working from the office.

ugghh this reminds me.. I need to convert a bedroom in my house to an office. Wife might get a chance to work from home on routine basis and orders have been dispatched for “proper” office set-up.
One less bedroom.

The flip side is that if I need to concentrate, I can go on Do Not Disturb, and no one disturbs me.
There’s pros and cons to it, for sure.

Oooh, nice desk!
But very bad chair.
Are you excited to work from home?Happy about the new gig? Congrats!

They pay my health insurance. That’s a big plus from doing contracting. So I’m happy about that, less so about 3 jobs in a year because loonies at the first place, where I was for 7.5 years before getting booted out the door because they don’t know how to make money, apparently.
I’m still remembering how to program, since I just had to script a ton of stuff before, and only did actual programming as a side thing for fun.

It went for 7 rounds of golf in the first series, dinnit? More than could be said for CBJ, Anaheim, or Colorado...

I just passed the two-year mark working from home and I’m 3-5x more productive than I ever was in the office.
No smalltalk, no commute, no fluff, no facetime. Just work, then DONE.
On the flipside, management gets pretty entitled that you’ll be available whenever they need you.

What language are you programming in? What kind of work/industry?
I’m a former C++ dev doing Java - it’s web work, so lots of Javascript and other front-end dev, plus I get to play with Groovy.

I was about to suggest a standing desk!

Good deal, man. I do some work from home because I just don’t have enough hours in the day at the office to meet basic requirements. On the other hand, my employer was nice enough to let me work this way, so that’s a big plus.
My “desk” at home, however, is our dining room table.

I was doing Java, now I’m dealing with Ruby and the logistics industry. The job I got laid off from was also in logistics, so now it’s just dealing with the way Ruby does things.

I usually expect or actually receive new interrupto-tasks constantly throughout the day, which is ruinous on getting actual larger projects done. My most productive hours are on any days I’m staying late and nobody is here.
![]() 04/27/2018 at 09:13 |

I just need to order a proper chair. Proper, unfortunately means expensive. Of course, if you order a $1500 chair and it lasts ten or more years, it’s the same thing as buying a $150 every year for ten years.

Those are the most productive hours in an office. Silly silly early, or silly silly late.

Also MECHANICAL KEYBOARD MASTER RACE
(There’s another Logitech M570 in the closet).

still better than my habs this year.

I feel for you. My prized Blackhawks* were best described as a “hot mess” this year.
*Side note: I’m from Chicago, but spent enough time in Toronto that if push ever comes to shove, I should be able to get enough points on the skilled immigrant test to get a pass into Canada. I have a college degree, speak English and French, am polite, and can deal with snow.

I have a black widow with cherry Greens at work (with track ball) and a CM storm with red at home (also with trackball)
track balls are great,

This is some Corsair thing with Cherry Blues, and there’s a Das Keyboard with Cherry Blues in the closet.
I’m considering a Filco board since the new job gave me a MacBook Pro, which is fine, but it’s the new one with USB-C so #DongleLife. I found a few mechanical boards that use USB for power and Bluetooth for data connection.
God I hate that butterfly MBP keyboard. You have no idea how much hate I have for that thing.

no mention of your love for maple syrup and Poutine?
wait a maple syrup poutine would be good.

I need to replace the one at work. Its starting to show it age a bit (it was my dads and he used it a LOT. when he became semi retired, he gave it to my instead of shelling out another $100 cad for it.
Also, everyone I know in my riding groups these days have been buying hornets. WTF. like, at least 6 different ppl bought a hornet for this season.

Hopefully the transition back to programming is smooth, and this is a lot more stable! I’m sure it feels good to have something more permanent, and that all important health care coverage.

Is that the motorized standing desk off monoprice?
![]() 04/27/2018 at 11:34 |

That would be good, actually. I should get a rib roast to make gravy for poutine. I already have maple syrup on hand.
(Yes, you get prime rib at my house before you get poutine. It makes excellent gravy.)

My fingers need that feedback. I even knew a guy who bought a board with Cherry Reds. I asked him if he just liked putting his fingers in a bowl of grits for fun (which has about the same consistency)

No. It’s from Beyond The Office Door. https://www.btod.com/

I’ve already cranked out two bugs, working on a data ingestion tool for a column oriented database, and fixed the code linter configuration.
I’d say it’s working halfway decently so far.
My previous place that I worked at was also 50 miles away, so it was 3 hours round trip in the car to get there. I do not miss that part of it one bit.

I prefer the reds if I’m honest. the feed back makes me pause and wonder if I need to push it all the way down.

Yes, we can commiserate about the terrible season over steak down in Georgia.
![]() 04/27/2018 at 12:49 |

Then you may like putting your fingers in a bowl of grits for fun. :)
But at least we can agree Apple’s current butterfly keyboards are genuinely awful.

agree. I hate anything non- mech now.

Thats the part I don’t like, it’s like your on call at whatever ungodly hour management decides you need to be working
